Reminiscences and letters. 1908-ca. 1965.

Reminiscences (ca. 1947-1965) relating to gold mining in Western Australia in 1901; Mackrell's career in butter factories in Victoria and with J. Bartram and Son (manufacturers and importers of dairy apparatus and supplies) in Melbourne; and his later experience as Minister in Victorian Parliament. Included is a detailed description of his employment in South Africa 1908-1916 with J. Bartram and Son. Also, includes letter to Mackrell from Jan Cristiaan Smuts, Pretoria, 26 July 1941, and letter to Mackrell from J. Bartram and Son, 25 May 1908.

Mackrell was born 16 December 1879. At the age of 14 he worked part-time in a butter factory in Mansfield, at 18 he managed the Fish Creek butter factory and he subsequently managed the Buln Buln butter factory in Melbourne. From 1901 to 1905 he was a prospector, carpenter and engine driver on the W.A. goldfields. He then returned to Victoria to work for J. Bartram and Son travelling and erecting milk separators.
